John and Marlena's bond deepened in the worst possible circumstances: at Sami's bedside during her coma.
While Marlena and John were distracted by their focus on Sami and her recovery, Kristen was working overtime to cover up her myriad of lies, while her father Stefano quietly orchestrated from the shadows, using his daughter's desperation and insecurity as a weapon against Marlena.
Opinion: The writer's wrote John Black as the dumbest man alive during the Pillow Baby storyline. Seriously, how did he NOT know that was a pillow strapped to Kristen's abdomen. He slept beside her at night. He hugged her. Did he never once want to feel his child kick? Kristen never gained weight, her ankles were never swollen, and ran around that hospital light as a feather faking cramps to get Marlena off her back. Seriously. I have real questions.
As the web tightened around Kristen, Susan unexpectedly went into labor.
Marlena, being the queen we all know her to be, was deeply skeptical of Kristen, but she suppressed her true feelings for John out of respect for his impending fatherhood.
John was fantasizing about Marlena. Kristen was having nightmare's about Marlena telling John the truth, and him leaving her. Marlena desperately loved him, but felt like they would never be together. This continued through March and April as Kristen's lies circled her, growing tighter and tighter.
April 14, 1997 was when John was informed by the ISA that Roman had died during a deep cover assignment in Afghanistan.
John and Marlena had several discussions about the price she paid for their affair. John's guilt was related to how the fallout hurt her. Marlena's guilt is over Roman's choice to leave Salem and his children... and the fact that he then died in the line of duty.
Friday, May 9, and Monday, May 12 viewers finally got what they'd been waiting for. Marlena figured it all out when she found a stone she'd given Susan on the floor of Kristen's living room.
Kristen really believed she had everything in hand until the Friday episode the last week of May.
Opinion: The secret room scenes with Deidre Hall and Eileen Davidson really showcased their chemistry as actors together. They'd always had good scenes but some of the secret room scenes were comedic. There were some where the seething hatred jumped off screen. Amazing. Eileen Davidson once said in an interview that her and Deidre Hall had girl chemistry, and I agree.
