Canon Divergence:
Most of the fan fiction you will find on this site is canon divergence. Canon Divergence is a storytelling trope where an original story’s established events occur as normal until a specific turning point. That is when the narrative diverges from the original plot, allowing the writer to explore completely new outcomes, changes in character's choices or motives, and/or alternate consequences. Canon divergence typically explores specific questions like What if a certain character lived instead of died? or What if they chose a different path at a crucial turning point? Unlike a complete Alternate Universe (AU) that changes everything (e.g., placing characters in a modern, everyday setting), canon divergence keeps the original world, rules, and character traits intact. The story focuses on how this single change cascades and creates a completely different trajectory for the characters.

Alternate Universe:
Stories in this category are set in alternate universes. This means that they exist outside the accepted canon of Days of Our Lives history. We take the characters and relationships and place them somewhere else outside of the world we know on the show. These have different settings, different time periods, and different genres. Sometimes this can include canon divergence, but not always.
